Golden Scroll Pursuivant

Q: Who or What is the Golden Scroll?

A: The office of the Golden Scroll is responsible for filling requests for replacement charters. A charter is the preprinted, hand-painted document that is distributed with most Ansteorran awards, and which most people refer to as "scrolls."

Q: Who can request a charter from Golden Scroll?

A: If you received a grant-level or lower Ansteorran award, but never received a scroll, you can request one. Golden Scroll does not fill requests for Peerage, Royalty, or Lion scrolls (please contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for information about requesting one of these scrolls). Golden Scroll only fills requests for non-armigerous, AoA-level, and Grant-level Ansteorran awards and ceremonial honors for which we currently have charters, including the following:

Non-Armigerous
AoA Level
Grant Level
Ceremonial Honors
Sable Falcon
Award of Arms
Grant of Arms
Queen's Champion
Queen's Rapier
Compass Rose
White Scarf
King's Lancer
Rising Star
Sable Comet
Star of Merit
King's Archer
Sable Thistle
Iris of Merit
Golden Bridle
Sable Talon
Arc d'Or
Sable Crane
Golden Lance
King's Gauntlet
Centurion
Queen's Glove
Court Barony

Golden Scroll cannot currently fill requests for scrolls for baronial orders, some ceremonial honors, or closed orders.

The intent of the office is to fill requests for people who never received a scroll with their award or who lost their scroll due to extraordinary circumstances, such as a house fire.

It is not appropriate to request a replacement scroll because you don't like the colors in yours, you've changed your persona or the spelling of your name, or you spilled a Coke on it.

Other requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If you're not sure, please ask!

Q: How do I request a charter from Golden Scroll?

A: To request a charter, contact Golden Scroll with the following information:

  • Your mundane name, address, phone number, and email address
  • Your SCA name
  • The name of the award, the group that hosted the event where you received it, the date you received it, and which Crown gave it to you
  • For Thistles, please also specify the art form; for Comets, specify the group; for Talons, specify the martial activity

It is especially important that you provide the name of the group where you received your award – that information must be filled in on the scroll, but is not recorded in the OP, so it's often very difficult to find.

Burden of proof is on you. If you cannot provide sufficient proof that you actually received the award that you claim to have, Golden Scroll can't provide a scroll for you. Other types of proof may be accepted; please check with the Golden Scroll if you feel you can provide an alternate form of proof.

Q: When will I receive my charter?

A: The time it takes to complete a scroll can vary depending on a number of factors. However, most scrolls should be received within 4-6 weeks. Feel free to inquire with the Golden Scroll about the progress of your request.
